Garage
Supporting and equipping a community of fearless girls who are building the world they want to see.
Girls Garage is a nonprofit design and building program and dedicated workspace for girls ages 9–18 providing classes in carpentry, welding, architecture, and activist art.
Girls Garage teaches girls to speak up, stand out, and make trouble. They provide a physical space for girls, providing an intentionally inclusive space that means that girls are seen, supported, and invited to shape their own world. They also published a book to help girls around the world discover their potential, Girls Garage: How to Use Any Tool, Tackle Any Project, and Build the World You Want to See.
In their 3,600-square-foot workshop in Berkeley and under the guidance of our highly skilled all-female staff, Girls Garage invites girls to bring their creative voice and put technical skills to work on real-world building projects that live in their communities.
To date, girls have built 133 projects ranging from furniture for a domestic abuse shelter to a greenhouse for a community garden and fruit stand for an organization serving refugee families. All teen participants attend the program at no cost to their families. 70% of girls are girls of color, and 62% of girls attend Girls Garage for 3 or more years.
